My husband, the Accused Criminal

It's funny how some things in life can be blown way out of proportion. I mean WAY out. Back in July, when I was with my sisters celebrating Jen's baby-shower in North Carolina, Dan called me with this ludicrous story: He was helping his friend, Nate Curtis, move apartments. It was Pioneer Day. Why do we remember that? Because when they went to drop off their loot of second-hand belongings, D.I. was closed. So, thinking there was no harm in donating, Nate tosssed the bags over the fence. Within seconds, a white car comes blazing towards them and an irate man gets in Dan's face about littering, saying, "Don't you know it's against the law?" So, naturally, Dan got in HIS face and told him he didn't care.

Later that evening, two officers stopped by the house, issuing Dan a citation for littering. One of them was an off-duty cop - the same one that Dan had the altercation with. They demanded Dan give up his friend's name (since Nate was the one who actually threw the bags over the fence). Dan refused, but still had to sign the citation. His first opportunity to dispute the citation was scheduled for October 21st. Unfortunately, this was the day after Ty joined our family. Dan's criminal defense attorney friend scheduled a continuance for January. This is where the story gets good:

Apparently, the city of Provo has absolutely nothing for their officials to do (If you can't tell, Dan is narrating the story now.) Shortly before Christmas, Dan received a summons from the fourth district court, where the city prosecutor had filed charges for littering, AND added a charge for "Obstruction of Justice", based on Dan not telling his friend's name (How ridiculous is that? Dan was genuinely worried because the charge could ultimately acquire Dan jail-time, or come back to haunt him when he tries to sit for the Bar in the future).

Long story short, Dan's attorney friend got the Obstruction of Justice charge dropped and the judged accepted a plea for "attempted littering" and a $150.00 fine. Although Dan was mad that the "stupid city of Provo" got any money, he was pleased that he never gave the cops (AKA "Dirty Pigs", as Dan refers to them) who his friend was. Out of appreciation, Nate paid the fine.

To make the story even crazier, Dan swears one of the two officers is in our new ward. YIKES. Let's just hope they don't end up as home-teaching companions or something like that! Somehow, I don't think it'd go over so well...

That is SO ridiculous! My brother-in-law is a "dirty pig" by the way. ;) I'm sure he would agree with you though! Provo cops really need to find better things to do.

I still laugh at this! Seriously...considering how much Dan dislikes the police - it was only karma for him to have a run in with the Provo 5-0 over donated clothes.
